Volvo EX60 demand explodes: Volvo is already increasing production

Sometimes a new Volvo lands… and quietly finds its audience. And sometimes a new Volvo lands and immediately causes the factory planners in Gothenburg to panic.

That second scenario appears to be happening with the new Volvo EX60, as Volvo Cars has just confirmed it will increase production volumes for 2026 following unexpectedly strong demand across Europe.

Orders are exceeding Volvo’s expectations

Barely a month after the EX60’s public reveal, order intake is already significantly higher than Volvo anticipated.

According to Volvo, almost all major European markets are reporting orders above internal forecasts, with Sweden alone already recording more than 3,000 customer orders.

That surge is being helped by a new “Care” offer, which focuses on simplified ownership and includes three years of free home charging for customers.

Perhaps the most interesting comparison: the EX60 is currently attracting orders at a faster pace than the EX30 did after its reveal in 2023—despite the EX30 sitting in a lower price segment and being positioned as Volvo’s entry-level EV.

And here’s the kicker: the order books are only open in Europe so far. The United States will follow later this spring.

In other words, demand could grow even further.

Torslanda may stay open longer this summer

To keep up with demand, Volvo is already looking at expanding production of the EX60 at its Torslanda Plant in Sweden.

The company is currently discussing with labour unions the possibility of keeping the factory open an extra week during the summer, something that would be a first in Volvo’s history.

For a company known for cautious production planning, that says a lot about how strong the order books currently are.

A “game-changer” electric SUV

Volvo itself describes the EX60 as a “game-changing electric SUV”, designed to sit at the heart of the brand’s lineup.

The car promises:

Class-leading electric range

Ultra-fast charging comparable to a short coffee stop

Pricing aligned with the current XC60 plug-in hybrid

If Volvo gets the formula right, the EX60 could become the electric successor to one of the brand’s biggest success stories.

And judging by the first month of orders, customers seem to agree.

Production starts soon

Volvo says it will carefully ramp up production to ensure build quality remains high. Customer car production is scheduled to begin next month, marking the start of what could become Volvo’s next blockbuster SUV.

For Volvo, strong demand for the EX60 is a “good problem to have.”

For the Torslanda factory workers… it might mean a slightly shorter summer break.
